How To Restore An Old Dresser
Introduction
An old dresser can be a great addition to any home, adding character and charm to a room. However, if the dresser is looking a little worse for wear, it may be time to give it a restoration. Restoring an old dresser can be a fun and rewarding project, and it doesn’t need to be too difficult either. With the right tools and a bit of knowledge, you can restore an old dresser to its former glory.
Gather Your Supplies
Before you start your restoration project, you’ll need to gather a few supplies. First, you’ll need some sandpaper in various grits. A medium-grit sandpaper is usually enough to get started, but you may need to use a finer grit to get a smoother finish. You’ll also need some wood putty or filler to cover up any nicks or chips, and some paint or stain to finish the job. Finally, you’ll need some protective gear, like gloves, a dust mask, and safety glasses.
Prepare The Dresser
Once you have your supplies, you’ll need to prepare the dresser for restoration. Start by removing all the hardware from the dresser, including the knobs and handles. Next, give the dresser a good cleaning. Use a damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, and cobwebs. If the dresser is particularly dirty, you may need to use a mild detergent.
Sand The Dresser
Once the dresser has been cleaned, it’s time to start sanding. Begin with a medium-grit sandpaper and work your way up to a finer grit if necessary. Start by sanding the surface of the dresser, then move on to the edges and corners. Be sure to sand the entire surface evenly, and don’t forget to sand the drawers and compartments as well. Once you’ve finished sanding, use a vacuum to remove all the dust.
Fill In Nicks and Chips
Once the dresser is sanded, it’s time to fill in any nicks or chips with wood putty or filler. Apply the putty to the area, then use a putty knife to smooth it out. Allow the putty to dry completely before sanding the area again. Once the area is smooth, you can move on to the next step.
Paint or Stain The Dresser
Once the dresser is prepped and ready to go, it’s time to paint or stain it. If you’re using paint, apply a coat of primer first, then two coats of paint. For stain, apply a coat of pre-stain wood conditioner, then two coats of stain. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before reattaching the hardware. Once the hardware is in place, your old dresser is ready to be admired!
